Why golf is more exciting than you think...

Let’s start with the general misconception that golf is apparently “the most boring sport” that’s out there.

While the idea of hitting a ball across a field for a couple of hours may seem rather monotonous, there are so many other ways to enjoy this wonderful hobby.

There are many ways to enjoy golf including:

  • Minigolf
  • Visiting a golf range
  • golf on the field with friends

All of these golf ideas can make for one of many perfect summer activities if you’re bored over the holidays!

Golf is the perfect activity for a day out, because of how social it is.

Isn’t it exciting being able to compete with your mates to see who can get the lowest score on a dinosaur themed mini-golf course?

Or what about the satisfaction of being able to hit a 300 yard shot on a tee that makes a crisp sound as you hit the ball? I’m sure that will impress your friends!

Golf is more enjoyable than you think and it’s for that reason that it’s an amazing way to relieve your stress and relax your mind!

1. Beautiful landscapes, peaceful scenery and a break from the urban air pollution!

Golf is just one of those sports that is never lacking with its beauty. The abundance of natural landscapes with miles of overlapping fields make golf courses a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the fresh air and take a break from the bustling, urban world.

The ability to connect with nature by looking out at the overlapping fields. beautiful lakes and the smell of fresh green grass will certainly help to filter out any stress and anxiety from the busy world.

So if your mind needs a break and some relaxation, golf is a fantastic sport to switch off from the busy outside world and flourish in the gorgeous greenery and scenery!

2. Golf's a perfect opportunity for hanging out with friends and raising social awareness!

If sports and social activity are your kind of thing, then golf is the perfect sport for spending time with friends and family.

This is a perfect if you have any stress and anxiety, because like the beautiful landscapes and peaceful scenery that golf has to offer, spending time socialising is a great away to forget about the stressful thoughts lingering in your mind.

For starters, golf has a plethora of meetup groups and mentoring groups to connect with, allowing you to improve your craft for this glorious sport as well as create awesome friend groups.

Or perhaps if you’re bored and are looking for new ways to spend time with your friends, hiring a golf kart and enjoying the gorgeous views of the field with your mates as you drive along would make for some incredible social boosting.

Mini golf is in fact the perfect form of golf for more social awareness. It’s simple, yet exciting nature makes it far more accessible if you’re not the most experienced golfer in the world, yet it can certainly bring out the competitive nature in you and whoever you wish to challenge!

So if you want to find cool ways of hanging out with friends or to connect with new like-minded golfers, then golf is perfect for increasing your social circle and helping to forget about the stress of the outside world!

3. Fantastic for intuitive thinking and keeping your brain active

For those of you that think golf is a simple sport where all it takes is a simple swing of a club to hit a stationary, white ball, think again!

Golf can often require a high level of technical proficiency and intuitive thinking to absolutely master, and it’s for that reason that learning the sport is a fantastic way to boost morale and increase confidence.

This makes golf a great sport to develop a positive mindset, helping you to avoid intrusive thoughts and negative thinking.

You can check out this video below explaining how much of a mental game golf really is:

Essentially what he’s saying is that to be successful in golf, you need to stop thinking negatively. Golf teaches you the true value of conscious discipline, because it can help to train the mind to think positively.

This is what mindset is required to become successful and it’s one that will absolutely wash away the unnecessary stressful thoughts and anxiety that you might suffer from!

4. A change of pace compared to most other sports:

Let’s consider a sport like football (or soccer for you Americans…). It’s a very popular sport just like basketball and is up there as the most watched sport in the entire world.

However, the pressure and fast-paced nature of a football game can cause you to worry and stress if you end up under-performing. It’s especially scary when you consider the possibility of embarrassing yourself in front of loud crowds!

This can certainly get mentally straining especially if the pressure on you to perform in a match can cause you to stress out.

While there are aspects of golf that can also be rather stressful, there is certainly a relaxed element to the sport that most other sports do not possess…

Yes, the fear of unintentionally hitting 10 golf balls into a lake on a course, which you used your hard-earned money to purchase can stress you out. However, when you dive deeper into the sport, there’s certainly a much more relaxed change of pace!

Why is golf such a more relaxed sport you might ask. Well there are so many reasons:

  • To hit a great shot, it takes time and precision to plan and position yourself to hit the ball. As a result, crowds and the people you play with will be quiet to give you more room to think and get less distracted.

On top of this…

  • Just thinking about the distance the ball needs to travel, the gradient of a hill, the wind direction, the thickness of the grass and the obstacles in the way of your shot are just a few of the things you need to think about and are what make the sport much slower paced compared to say football!

And while a lot of this can definitely be stressful to think about, what makes golf a great sport to help with anxiety is that you get more breathing room and time to analyse and make your move, something that football or basketball tends to struggle to provide.

The ability to have more time to think can actually reduce your anxiety and relieve stress, because it allows you to have more time to prepare instead of mushing your plan together.

This can really help with your problem-solving skills and can train the brain to think smarter and more on the spot with time.

So while you might think golf is mentally straining at times, just remember that the slower change of pace during games, can actually be valuable for teaching your brain how to think properly and more efficiently before making shots, something that is fantastic outside of golf and can be applied to the real world as well!

5. Playing more golf = lower blood sugar levels = lower stress!

Physical activity in general can help to lower blood sugar levels, but of course certain sports and activities will not cater to everyone!

That is why golf can be a perfect activity to reduce those high blood sugar levels, especially if the cause is the stress of a frustrating job or busy, difficult day of work.

But firstly we need to consider the impacts of high blood sugar levels. In particular, these include:

  • Higher risk of diabetes
  • Mental strain, leading to lower concentration, confusion and an inability to think properly
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue

Generally these things tends to occur due to our cells not receiving enough glucose needed for energy exertion, leading to a high accumulation of sugar in our blood.

Golf offers a fantastic, unique and more exciting way to help counteract this. That’s because it involves a lot of walking, and body movements to swing the golf club, all of which require a lot of energy.

The considerable amount of activity involved in golf can help our body cells to become more insulin sensitive, which help our cells to store more glucose and hence energy to play!

This is great for lowering blood sugar levels!

There are a shear variety of reasons for why golf is so valuable for the mind and reducing stress and anxiety makes it a fantastic sport when it comes to dealing with our mental health.

Whether it’s the relaxation of the peaceful scenery and beautiful landscapes that will help to calm the mind or the technical side of the sport that requires a lot of thinking that trains the brain to keep active and sharp, golf is certainly a very unique sport that will offer so many benefits for you!

It is absolutely worth giving it a go!
